Schröder has checked into a hotel in the center of the Russian capital. Our Moscow correspondent Dirk Emmerich approached him there and asked for an interview, which he very politely declined. “I’m vacationing here for a few days. Moscow is a beautiful city.”
In a video, Moscow correspondent Dirk Emmerich reports how the former chancellor affected him in conversation. When asked that it wasn’t far to the headquarters of the Russian oil company Rosneft, Gerhard Schröder replied: “Is that so? Oh yes, that’s right, you’re right.”
The ex-Chancellor had decided in May to give up his post there and also stated that he would not take up an offer on the board of directors of the gas company Gazprom.
The ex-chancellor has been criticized for years for his ties to Russia and his close ties to President Putin. Even after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, many believe that Schröder has not sufficiently distanced himself from Russia.
