Singaporean runner Shaun Goh, 27 years old, made headlines by breaking the national record for the men’s 10km road race at the Run Prix 10km in Melbourne on September 22. Out of 188 runners, Goh finished 20th with an impressive time of 31:00, surpassing the previous record set by Soh Rui Yong by 37 seconds. Soh Rui Yong, 33, had set the record with a time of 31:37 at the Valencia Half Marathon in October 2023.

Soh Rui Yong graciously congratulated Goh on his achievement, calling him “the fastest Singaporean ever over 10km, road or track.” Goh revealed that he had set out with the goal of breaking the national record and felt confident in his abilities. The race conditions were favorable, and he felt strong during the initial 5km. As the race progressed, Goh focused on catching up to other runners who had started too fast. Despite facing a challenging headwind that affected his pace, he managed to finish strongly in the last 2km.

Expressing his satisfaction with his performance, Goh credited his coach for preparing him to finish races strongly even when fatigued. Looking ahead, Goh has his sights set on the Valencia Half Marathon scheduled for October 27, where he aims to improve upon his personal best time of 69:53.

Goh’s achievement has been celebrated by Singapore Athletics and Team Singapore, showcasing his dedication and talent in the running community. His success serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and underscores the importance of perseverance and hard work in achieving one’s goals.
