The Dutchwoman Femke Bol beat her own world record in the 400 meters, in 49.17 seconds, on Saturday March 2 evening from Glasgow, where the World Indoor Athletics Championships are taking place, to claim her first world title in ” indoor”.
Leading from start to finish of the two laps, the athlete beat her compatriot and friend Lieke Klaver (50 seconds 16) and the American Alexis Holmes (50 seconds 24). Bol, world champion in the 400 meters hurdles and 4×400 last summer, had already improved her world record in the 400 meters indoors in mid-February during the Dutch championships (49 seconds 24).
Impressively relaxed as usual, the Dutchwoman took off like a bomb and took the lead without ever being worried.
At 24, Femke Bol has now won in every major international championship (Europe and World, indoor and outdoor) except the Olympics.
Just after Bol’s coronation, Karsten Warholm, also king of the 400 meter hurdles in the summer, attempted to achieve the same feat. But the Norwegian, who started at full speed (passing 200 in 21 seconds 21), broke down in the last meters and was beaten by the Belgian Alexander Doom by nine hundredths (45 seconds 25, Belgian record).
