Arsenal’s women’s team beat London’s rivals 2-1 in a double header.
Havertz opened the scoring in the first half before Granit Xhaka pulled one back for Arsenal after the break. Abraham scored Chelsea’s second goal after only four minutes.
Chelsea held a dominant possession position for most of the match. They were rewarded 26 minutes later when Timo Werner began a fast break that found Havertz, whose right-footed shot passed Bernd Leno.
There was an injury worry for Arsenal on 40 minutes when Thomas Partey was forced off. Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s coach, said that Partey would undergo a scan Monday, but it was not looking good at the moment.
While the Partey situation is concerning for Arsenal, the match also saw the introduction of new PS50 million signing Ben White.
Xhaka scored Arsenal’s equaliser on 69 minutes when he headed home from a Nicolas Pepe cross.
Arteta stated after the match that although the move to Roma was being discussed, the Swiss international had been linked to a move.
Arteta stated that Granit will be staying with us. Arteta said, “He is a crucial member of our squad.”
Chelsea didn’t fall behind for long though. Abraham scored a powerful, right-footed goal in the corner to give them the lead after 73 minutes.
Arsenal defeated Chelsea 2-1 in the early kickoff between the women’s teams with goals by Freya Jupp and Katie McCabe.
Reanna Blade had scored for Chelsea in 80 minutes, but Jupp (17 years old) was the star of Arsenal’s win. She scored on 83 minutes.
Arsenal had taken the lead after 27 minutes thanks to McCabe, but it was the younger players that impressed.
Both sides had injury concerns with Pernille Harter and Jordan Nobbs going down with knocks.
