German Federal environment minister, Mr. Jade Schulze (SPD) no longer sees Germany as a pioneer in field of climate protection. It had been overestimated “what previous measures have done,” she said to Süddeutsche Zeitung. Germany will not be able to achieve climate protection targets set within EU and must “buy freely” in accordance with European rules. “I would prefer that we invest money in climate protection and modernisation of infrastructure with us.”

Climate protection has so far been similar to “New Year’s Eve. You have good intentions, and at end of year you say: Next year I’ll do better, “says Schulze. The rich no longer. The current climate protection report shows that Federal Republic will not achieve its goal of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases by 40 per cent compared to 1990 by 2020. Currently only 32 percent savings seem possible. Without 2014 Climate Protection action Programme decided, gap would be even greater. The reasons for emissions are comparatively strong economic growth, fall in price of oil, coal and gas and migration.
Schulze also stressed that climate protection could “not be overlooked by people’s heads”. For example, it should be clarified how future of coal regions could look like. “We’ve all been thinking for a long time, subject is learned. You don’t have to advertise much anymore, majority is behind it. But it’s just not through. ” There is a need for more commitment to climate protection, “also in line with AfD’s climate change denials.” The example of USA shows, says Schulze: “You can also deselect truths.”

Ministers and or high-ranking representatives from around 35 states are now meeting in Berlin for Petersberg climate dialogue. The meeting is to prepare next UN climate conference in December in Katowice, Poland.
With focus on justice, social aspects of climate protection will be at heart of Dialogue Forum in Berlin this year. Environment Minister Schulze toger with President-designate of UN climate conference, Polish state secretary Kurtyka, invited meeting. Speeches by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki are planned tomorrow.
