Jerusalem prepares for the opening of the american embassy
The president-elect of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, told an israeli newspaper that he intended to move his country’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Questioned by the newspaper ‘Israel Hayom’ on their plans to move the Brazilian embassy to Jerusalem, an idea mentioned during his election campaign, Bolsonaro was estimated that Israel should be free to choose its capital.
“When they asked me, during the campaign, if you would when you were president, I responded, ‘yes, it is you who decide what is the capital of Israel, not other nations’,” he said in an interview published Thursday by the journal favorable to the israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
The right-wing Jair Bolsonaro, of 63 years, won on Sunday the second round of the presidential elections, brazilian, despite having raised strong criticism with his comments sexist, homophobic and racist.
Netanyahu has been estimated that the victory of Bolsonaro “would lead to a great friendship between (their) peoples and to the strengthening of relations between Brazil and Israel”. An officer from his office told AFP that the prime minister will attend “very likely” to the investiture ceremony in Brazil.
The question of the location of the embassies in Israel is a very controversial topic.
The Hebrew State considers the entire city of Jerusalem as its capital, while palestinians want East Jerusalem to become the capital of their future State.
For the international community, the status of the Holy City has to be negotiated between the two parties, and the embassies do not have to settle there until an agreement has been reached.
The president of the united States, Donald Trump, broke in December of 2017 with decades of diplomacy to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Since then, the palestinian president, mahmoud Abbas, put an end to all relations with the administration Trump.
After the united States moved its embassy in Guatemala and Paraguay, although this country weeks ago stepped back and returned his delegation to Tel Aviv.
