Schwerin (dpa/mv) – When comparing the federal states in terms of the economic quality of their education systems, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is in the lower midfield. The INSM education monitor 2021 published on Wednesday by the German Economic Institute (IW) puts the north-east in 10th place out of the 16 federal states. Last year, MV took 9th place in the education ranking. When it came to digitization, MV only came in 14th.
According to the study, the north-east has particular strengths in the integration of foreign students and in vocational training. A relatively large number of young foreigners obtained their Abitur at general schools. Measured by the number of young people, the range of training places is higher than the national average and only a few did not get a training place. However, many training contracts would still be terminated prematurely.
The researchers see a need for improvement, among other things, in the care of children in day-care centers and schools. The ratio of supervisors and supervised is sometimes unfavorable. The expenditure on education per student at schools and vocational schools is comparatively low. It is also critically noted that comparatively few young people are trained in computer science.
The educational systems from kindergarten to university were evaluated in the monitoring. It “explicitly adopts an educational economic perspective” and evaluates the extent to which the federal states reduce educational poverty, contribute to securing skilled workers and promote growth. Saxony was again at the top ahead of Bavaria, with Bremen again bringing up the rear. The INSM education monitor is created on behalf of the New Social Market Economy Initiative (INSM), which claims to be financed by the employers’ associations in the metal and electrical industry.
