The sweltering heat can be exasperating and increase anyone’s moodiness level. That is something that everyone knows, but what we did not know is that crimes of gender violence and sexist murders increase after suffering extreme weather conditions. This has been confirmed by a study by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII).

According to data provided by this institution, when a heat wave occurs in our country, the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners increases. In a report that analyzes femicides between 2003 and 2017, it stands out that more of these crimes occur in summer, with July being the month of the year with the most sexist murders, and August the third. On the contrary, April is the month with the fewest murdered women.

The Ministry of Equality has launched a campaign under the slogan ‘Be free. To be alive. Spain’ to raise awareness of the increase in cases of sexist violence during the summer, a period in which coexistence “can increase aggressions”, as specified by the department in a statement.

This campaign, which is accompanied by an advertising video, also seeks to “identify and denounce all forms of violence”, as well as inform about the different comprehensive care services that victims have at their disposal.

In the course of the spot, in addition to seeing cultural or geographical elements of Spain, the different rights and services that women can resort to in situations of discrimination or aggression are shown, such as the telephone service for comprehensive attention to victims 016, the centers 24-hour crisis or free legal and psychological assistance.

“The motto ‘Be Free. Be Alive. Spain’ represents that richness that defines us as a country, of which the policies to combat gender violence are a part,” says the ministry, for whom “it is essential to report on existing resources to care for the victims.

The campaign will be broadcast during the months of July and August, and will consist of graphic and outdoor pieces, as well as a TV spot, radio spots and materials for social networks.
