CLEVELAND, Ohio — Shake It Cerry is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the $180,000 Cleveland Trotting Classic at Northfield Park on Saturday.
The second edition of the Classic kicks off a holiday weekend at Northfield that includes a special Sunday program.
Shake It Cerry drew the three post for the race. The 5-year-old mare has 28 career wins and earnings of more than $2.5 million, but has not won this season.
Obrigado, the runner-up in last year’s Classic is 3-1 on the morning line, starting on the rail. Obrigado has won three of six starts this season, including the Charlie Hill Memorial at Scioto Downs on June 11.
One to watch is Like Old Times, the 2015 Ohio Horse of the Year, conditioned by Northfield Wall of Famer Don McKirgan. Like Old Times is a longshot at 25-1, but is coming off two straight wins at Northfield and broke the track record for 4-year-old trotting mares two weeks ago.
The Cleveland Jestbahis Trotting Classic, Northeast Ohio’s premier trotting race, is the 11th race on the 15-race program Saturday. First race post time is 6 p.m. The undercard features Foiled Again, the richest horse in harness racing history and three-time Battle of Lake Erie winner in one of three $20,000 Open races.
The special 17-race Sunday program has nearly $600,000 in purses and features the best freshman filly pacers and trotters in Ohio. First race post time is 6 p.m.
