The United Nations Interim Force for Lebanon (UNIFIL) is investigating an attack against positions of its Spanish battalion in Lebanon that has left no victims to regret, its spokesperson, Andrea Tenenti, has confirmed to the official Lebanese news agency NNA.

The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday in the eastern sector of the Abl el Qahm wheat plain, according to security sources to the newspaper L’Orient le Jour.

An observation tower at the post was damaged, but there are no reports of casualties among UN peacekeeping personnel, the spokesperson told the official Lebanese news agency, without giving further details of what happened at the moment.

The peace mission in the so-called blue line that separates Lebanon from Israel has 650 Spaniards, the majority belonging to the Parachute Brigade.

Located in the Lebanese town of Naqura, the UNIFIL headquarters has become an exceptional promontory to attend the daily duel between the Israeli army and the Hezbollah militias.

In 2007, six Spanish soldiers died in Lebanon in a premeditated attack, in which they placed explosives in a Renault with a false license plate that exploded by remote control as the BMR (light armored vehicle) passed by.
