LOS ANGELES >> The county’s largest transit agency Thursday approved a sweeping change in the way buses, trains and stations are policed, adding other law enforcement agencies and reducing the role of county sheriff’s deputies.
By a 13-0 vote, the board of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved a five-year policing contract worth $645.7 million.
The new contract adds the Los Angeles Police Department for coverage of trains and buses through the city of Los Angeles, and the Long Beach Police Department will patrol eight stations of the Blue Line in Long Beach. The Los Angeles Aresbet County Sheriff’s Department will patrol unincorporated areas and the San Gabriel Valley.
