Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been invited to Ukraine again by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. That’s what Ukraine’s outgoing ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, told Die Zeit.
“We are still waiting for his visit to Kyiv.” In a telephone call, Selenskyj personally invited him for the second time. Steinmeier should have traveled to Ukraine earlier. However, he was discharged. The reason given was Steinmeier’s close ties to Russia during his time as Foreign Minister. The unloading led to tensions between Germany and Ukraine.
Several federal ministers and also Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) have now visited Ukraine.
Melnyk, who became known for his sometimes sharp and clearly critical words, announced that he would be leaving Germany in a few weeks. He worked as ambassador in Germany for around seven and a half years.
