The Sepang 1000KM 2024 (S1K) is making headlines as it welcomes a record-breaking grid of up to 90 cars, marking it as the largest event in history and the grand finale of this year’s events calendar. The event, which began yesterday and runs until Nov 23, has attracted teams from various countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Singapore, Macau, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Chinese Taipei. These teams will be competing in categories including Malaysian Touring Car, S Production G, S Production V, and Vios Enduro.
Azhan Shafriman Hanif, the CEO of Sepang International Circuit (SIC), expressed his excitement about the increasing recognition of the race and the circuit’s reputation as a global motorsports destination. He highlighted the significance of having competitors from all around the world participating in the S1K and mentioned his anticipation to see if Toyota can continue its podium success at the event.
In a thrilling turn of events, the Proton R3 team is making a comeback to the S1K grid after their last appearance in 2019. This time, they will be competing with the new Proton S70 R3, fielding two cars with car #81 being driven by Syafiq Ali, a three-time S1K winner, and Fahrizal Hasan, a successful racer in the Sepang 12 Hours endurance race. On the other hand, Car #82 will be piloted by Ariff Azmi, an 18-year-old karting and touring car champion, and Alister Yoong, a 21-year-old Formula 4 racer and the son of former F1 driver, Alex Yoong.
The event is organized by PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit (PETRONAS SIC) with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia (KBS) and sanctioned by the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM). A notable addition to this year’s event is Hankook, serving as the Official Tyre Distributor for the first time, adding to the excitement and competitiveness of the races.
With the diverse range of teams and drivers participating in the S1K, fans can expect an action-packed and thrilling event that showcases the best of international motorsports talent. The inclusion of new teams and the return of seasoned competitors promises to make this year’s S1K one for the books, setting the stage for an unforgettable racing experience at the Sepang International Circuit.
