The San Pedro waterfront is undergoing a major transformation with the development of a new entertainment complex called West Harbor. This project, set to replace the former Ports O’ Call village, will feature a variety of attractions, including a massive Ferris wheel that will rival the iconic Pacific Wheel on the Santa Monica Pier.
According to renderings shared with the public, the West Harbor Ferris wheel will stand at an impressive 150 feet tall, making it 50% taller than its Santa Monica counterpart. Riders will be taken high into the air in enclosed gondolas, offering panoramic views of the Port of L.A., the Vincent Thomas Bridge, and the USS Iowa battleship.
In addition to the Ferris wheel, West Harbor will also be home to other carnival rides such as a carousel and wave swinger. These attractions will be operated by SkyView Partners, a St. Louis-based amusement park company and development firm.
The entertainment complex will not just be about rides, as it will also feature sports facilities managed by King of Padel, a San Diego company. Pickleball and padel courts will be among the offerings in the 50,000-square-foot sports complex.
Furthermore, the world-famous San Pedro Fish Market has agreed to remain in the area, moving to a waterfront-facing site next to a dedicated park for pop-up restaurants before transitioning to a permanent location within the complex.
The West Harbor project is a massive undertaking, spanning 42 acres with more than one mile of waterfront access. It will include a 20,000-square-foot beer garden, over 150,000 square feet of office and outdoor space, as well as shopping, entertainment, and dining options.
Developed in the space previously occupied by the rundown Ports O’ Call village, West Harbor is a collaboration between Jerico Development and Ratkovich Co. The city of Los Angeles and the Port of Los Angeles have also contributed significant funding to help bring this project to life.
While the first phase of West Harbor is expected to open by late 2025, the entire complex is poised to become a landmark destination in the Los Angeles area. With its mix of entertainment, dining, and recreational offerings, West Harbor aims to bring a new level of family-friendly fun and excitement to San Pedro’s waterfront.
