Europe’s First V2G Car Sharing Service in Utrecht: A Sustainable Mobility Revolution

In a groundbreaking move to address urban mobility and grid stability challenges, Utrecht has launched Europe’s first battery on wheels car-sharing service. This innovative initiative not only allows for car sharing but also incorporates two-way charging and clean energy solutions, setting a new standard for sustainable urban mobility.

Collaboration for Change

Supported by key players like the Renault Group, We Drive Solar, MyWheels, and the City of Utrecht, this project aims to provide large-scale access to electric shared mobility while addressing the growing need for grid flexibility in renewable energy systems. With Utrecht already leading in the use of renewable energy, this initiative further solidifies the city’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Revolutionizing Mobility

The project will kick off with the introduction of 500 Renault electric cars, including models like the Renault 5, Renault 4 E-Tech Electric, Megane E-Tech Electric, and the Scénic E-Tech Electric. Operated by MyWheels, these vehicles will utilize Mobilize two-way charging technology, allowing them to charge during off-peak hours and feed electricity back into the grid during peak demand.

Balancing Energy Systems

Each two-way vehicle is expected to play a crucial role in balancing solar and wind energy in the region, potentially providing up to 10% of the required network flexibility in Utrecht. This approach not only benefits users by reducing electricity costs but also helps cities transition to zero-emission mobility systems.

Paving the Way for Sustainable Urban Mobility

We Drive Solar will deploy two-way public AC chargers to ensure seamless integration of V2G technologies, setting an example for other cities looking to combine renewable energy and mobility solutions. This partnership showcases the impact of public-private collaboration in promoting sustainable mobility and serves as a scalable model for cities worldwide.

Closing Thoughts

As Utrecht leads the way in sustainable urban mobility with its innovative V2G car sharing service, it demonstrates the power of collaborative efforts in driving positive change. By integrating mobility and energy systems, the city not only solves local challenges but also provides a blueprint for a cleaner, more efficient future for urban transportation globally.
