The Hamas Health Ministry reported that at least 50 people were killed this Tuesday in an Israeli bombing of a camp in the Gaza Strip, an attack that the Israeli army confirmed and whose objective was to eliminate a commander of the Islamist group.

“More than 50 martyrs and nearly 150 injured and dozens of people under the rubble due to an atrocious Israeli massacre that hit a large area of ????houses in the Jabaliya camp” in the northern Gaza Strip, reported in a statement the Hamas Ministry of Health, which governs the enclave.

A video taken by AFP shows that at least 47 bodies were pulled from the rubble after the attack hit several houses in the camp. Dozens of people watched from the edges of two large craters while others searched for survivors.

Hours later, the Israeli army confirmed that it bombed the camp and killed Ibrahim Biari, a Hamas commander implicated in the October 7 attack on Israeli territory. “His elimination was carried out as part of a broad offensive against terrorists and against the terrorist infrastructure of the Central Jabaliya Battalion, which had taken control of several civilian buildings in Gaza City,” the Israeli military said.

“The bombing damaged Hamas’ command and control in the area, as well as its capabilities to direct military activities” against Israeli soldiers deployed in the Gaza Strip, he added. “A large number of terrorists who were with Biari were killed,” according to the same source, who added that tunnels used by Hamas were also destroyed.

For Ragheb Aqal, a resident of Jabaliya, the bombings were like “an earthquake” that shook the entire camp.

Before this attack, the Ministry of Health had reported 8,525 deaths in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli bombings since October 7. That day, Hamas fighters launched an attack in Israel, leaving 1,400 dead according to authorities and sparking a war.
