The dissident socialist Martine Froger won the partial legislative election on Sunday opposing her in Ariège to the outgoing deputy Nupes / LFI Bénédicte Taurine, we learned on Sunday from the prefecture.
Martine Froger was supported by the PS president of the Occitanie region, Carole Delga, and the number 2 of the party, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol. She collected 11,758 votes (60.19% of the vote) against outgoing Bénédicte Taurine, a rebellious candidate officially supported by the Left Union (7,776, 39.81% of the vote). In the first round, the rebellious candidate came first with 31.18% of the vote while the dissident socialist took second place with 26.42% of the vote.
The first constituency of Ariège had become on the occasion of this election a stake in the war of the left between the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure, who supported the Insoumise under the Nupes agreement, and the number 2 Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, defender of the dissident. The latter, who was present alongside the candidate in Foix, welcomed this victory, speaking directly to Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the former LFI candidate in the presidential election.
Dear @jlmelenchon, you’ll have to get used to it: in
Same story with Carole Delga who hailed Martine Froger’s “large victory”. “This election also says that blindly following a man cannot be the barycentre of the left, except to indulge in a minority and protesting culture”, writes the PS president of the Occitanie region, in a press release.
Congratulations to our socialist candidate
For his part, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, support of the outgoing MP, denounced a “lamentable political scheme” on Twitter.
Outgoing MP Bénédicte Taurine, disappointed, considered that Ms. Froger’s victory was “the victory of the right”.
The new deputy for the first constituency of Ariège, Martine Froger, told AFP: “Today, I make half of the PS happy, I have been a socialist for 30 years and I remain a socialist”.
Martine Froger also received congratulations from Olivier Dussopt, Minister of Labour, the Renaissance presidential party having very clearly called for a vote for her after a first round in which its candidate Anne-Sophie Tribout had obtained only 10 .69% of the votes.
“If there is of course a place on the political spectrum for a responsible left, this election shows above all that excess and radicalism do not pay and do not look like,” the minister wrote on Twitter.
“Tonight, the union of the left like the Nupes intergroup in the National Assembly loses a deputy”, underlines the PS.
