Bernal’s 2024 Cycling Season Reflection and Future Goals

In 2024, Egan Bernal of INEOS Grenadiers made a triumphant return to the cycling scene after facing a serious crash in his home country of Colombia the previous year. Although he didn’t secure a victory, Bernal was back in the mix, competing with some of the top riders in the sport. In a recent interview with AS Colombia, the former Tour de France winner opened up about his season and shared his aspirations for the future of his cycling career.

Reflecting on the past year, Bernal expressed mixed emotions about his performance. “It wasn’t bad,” the Colombian began, acknowledging that it wasn’t quite what he had hoped for. “I started this year with different expectations,” he added, alluding to the challenges he faced following his recovery from the crash. Despite falling short of a stage or overall victory, Bernal managed to secure impressive podium finishes alongside riders like Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar in various races throughout the season.

Looking ahead, Bernal remains optimistic about his progress and is feeling more like his old self. “I got my first podium after my accident, and I remember that well. I stood on the podium with Jonas, and that was a cool feeling,” he shared. While his power output has improved, Bernal acknowledges the high level of competition in the sport, noting that he still has work to do to reach his peak performance.

Bernal’s Pursuit of Major Cycling Goals

With two Grand Tour victories under his belt from the Tour de France in 2019 and the Giro d’Italia in 2021, Bernal’s sights are now set on completing the trilogy by winning the Vuelta a España. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, the Colombian remains determined to achieve his dream. “Winning the Vuelta will be difficult, but I believe in it. I always think about winning the Vuelta because it’s truly my dream,” Bernal stated.

As the 2024 season comes to a close, Bernal is already looking ahead to his goals for the upcoming year. One race stands out above the rest for the Colombian rider – the national championship. “I really want to win the national championship. It’s a race I definitely want to win so I can wear the champion’s jersey for a whole year. That’s something I want to achieve before I retire,” Bernal expressed with optimism.
