After starting out strong with routine pars on the first and second holes at TPC Summerlin, Dahmen’s error came to light. Two penalty strokes were added to his score on each of these holes, resulting in a double-bogey 6 for each. The golfer took responsibility for the oversight and promptly reported it to a rules official upon realizing that he had an extra 4-iron in his bag.
According to the Rules of Golf, a general penalty of two strokes is applied for each hole where a breach occurs. In this case, with the breach happening on the first two holes, a maximum of four penalty strokes could be assessed for the round. This adjustment put Dahmen at a disadvantage as he navigated the rest of the tournament.
Dahmen’s position in the FedExCup Fall standings added further pressure to the situation. Sitting at No. 124, he was on the cusp of the top 125 that would secure full exemption on the PGA TOUR for the following season. With the competition heating up and only a few events left to make his mark, every stroke counted for Dahmen.
Throughout the season, Dahmen had shown promise with 16 cuts made in 25 starts, including a notable T10 finish at the RBC Canadian Open. Despite having limited conditional status as a past champion, his ultimate goal was to secure a more stable position on the tour.
