Brittany: investigation opened after a mayor received a bullet by mail

An investigation for “death threat materialized by an object” was opened after the receipt by the mayor of Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer (Côtes-d’Armor) of a letter containing a 9 mm bullet, a indicated to AFP the parquet floor of Saint-Malo, confirming information from the Telegram.

The investigations “are currently in progress” and have been entrusted to the gendarmerie brigade of Plancoët (Côtes-d’Armor), according to the public prosecutor of Saint-Malo, Fabrice Tremel.

It was while going to pick up the mail from the town hall, Wednesday noon, that the mayor of this town of 900 inhabitants in winter and 10,000 in summer, Jean-Luc Pithois, came across a kraft paper envelope addressed to him, but in the name of “Putois”.

Inside, no letter but only a 9mm bullet wrapped in bubble wrap.

Contacted by AFP, Mr. Pithois, who filed a complaint, thinks that this threat originated in the plan to leave for a neighboring town of the two doctors from Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer following an attempt aborted takeover of the building in which they were working.

“The town hall had acquired it for 200,000 euros and they wanted to buy it back for 120,000 euros. I would have sold them, but the sub-prefect reminded me that the rules did not allow it to be done at less than 10% of the price. “purchase, or 180,000 euros, explains Jean-Luc Pithois, elected in 2020.

The municipal council was to meet Thursday evening and a call for a rally during this council was published on Wednesday on a local Facebook group in order to “wait and hear (…) the explanations of the elected officials of Saint-Jacut- De-La-Mer, regarding the departure of the doctors”.

The Saint-Malo prosecutor assures AFP that he “personally contacted the mayor of Saint-Jacut by telephone” and offered him “assistance through a victim support association”.

Mr. Pithois told AFP that he also received support from the sub-prefect of Dinan and the prefect of Côtes d’Armor. He said he had filed “five or six complaints” since the start of his mandate, due to “defamatory letters” against the municipal team.
