Rev. Theodore J. Jenkins Honored with Eulace Peacock Unsung Hero Award
The Township of Union and the Human Relations Commission recently came together to commemorate Black History Month in a truly special way. At the heart of this celebration was the recognition of Rev. Theodore J. Jenkins, a remarkable individual whose lifelong commitment to community service has left an indelible mark on those around him. The prestigious Eulace Peacock Unsung Hero Award was bestowed upon Rev. Jenkins during the township’s “The Conversation Continues” event held at Jefferson Elementary School on Saturday, Feb. 22.
A Lifetime of Dedication
Rev. Jenkins, a revered figure in the local community, has faithfully served as the pastor of Macedonia Christian Church in Vauxhall for an impressive 69 years. Known for his selfless devotion and unwavering dedication to the well-being of others, he has become a beloved and respected figure in Union. Mayor James Bowser, in reflecting on Rev. Jenkins’ impact, praised his remarkable contributions, stating, “His selfless service and dedication to our community have made a profound difference in the lives of so many.”
Rev. Jenkins’ journey of service began at a young age when his father assumed the role of pastor at the church in Vauxhall, a pivotal moment that would ultimately shape his life’s path. Despite initially pursuing a career in chemistry, Rev. Jenkins felt a higher calling to ministry, leading him to pursue theological education at Barrington College and the Biblical Seminary of New York City. This decision set him on a course that would touch countless lives and inspire generations to come.

Beyond his pastoral duties, Rev. Jenkins has made significant contributions to the field of education, holding various roles in school districts such as Newark Public Schools, Paterson Schools, and Elmwood Park Public Schools. His passion for learning and teaching led him to pursue a Doctorate from Rutgers University, further enhancing his ability to make a positive impact in the academic realm. Throughout his illustrious career, he has shared his knowledge and wisdom with students at institutions including Jersey City State University, Kean University, and Rutgers University Graduate School of Education.
