The head of the Podemos list in Asturias for the May 28 elections, Cova Tomé, and his team of collaborators have put an end to six days of confinement at the party headquarters in Gijón. This group of critics of the regional leadership consider the “objective” that the list was “respected” and registered before the Electoral Board as it came out of the purple party primaries. It is a reason that they used to entrench themselves in the premises last Thursday afternoon.
Despite declaring himself “especially satisfied” for having “achieved it”, Tomé regretted that they could not prevent the Asturian leadership from leaving out Jorge Fernández, number four in the candidacy, on whom there is a disqualification for workplace harassment.
The fact that Fernández was removed raised doubts about what the candidate’s reaction would ultimately be. Tomé has settled the issue and she and the others will continue as candidates for the Asturian elections. She will be number one, followed by Xune Elipe and Laura Tuero. The fourth position is officially for Ana Taboada, the first person related to the direction of Podemos in Asturias.
“We are not going to give the party to anyone,” Tomé stressed in a statement to the media, in which he stressed that they have “fought a lot” to now abandon the electoral candidacy.
In any case, he has warned that the road “does not end here” with the end of the confinement because, in addition to appealing the party’s decision before the ordinary courts, his intention is to have Fernández in the “work teams” that are formed after the elections.
Tomé has said that just getting the presence of the top three on the list to be “respected” was something that was “unimaginable” a few weeks ago and that, therefore, it is a “great victory” thanks to the “cohesion ” and the “push” of the Podemos militants. “There were many interests in Asturias so that it wasn’t us,” he stated.
After many months of fighting with the Asturian leadership, led by Rafa Palacios, and also with the national leadership of Podemos, Tomé and his people are already 100% campaigning. It is unknown whether or not all this confrontation will pass to Podemos at the polls. Precisely in Asturias he has direct competition against IU, which is presented separately with its own list. This is something that also only happens in Aragon. In the other ten autonomous communities there is unity between the two. In Asturias, no, and IU has been reinforced with Más País in the regional candidacy and with Gaspar Llamazares in the municipal list of Oviedo.
