Sen. Welch Urges Democratic Party to Embrace Change Post-Trump Victory

With the impending inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump just days away, Democratic lawmakers are grappling with the reality of four years of Republican leadership in the White House. Senator Peter Welch, D-Vt., is calling on his party to embrace change and adapt to the shifting political landscape.

In an interview with Semafor, Sen. Welch emphasized the need for Democrats to acknowledge Trump’s victory and recognize the desires of the American people for change. He highlighted the importance of engaging in principled fights rather than simply opposing Trump for the sake of it.

Welch stated, “It’s just accepting the reality that Trump won. And us just saying he’s a chaotic guy goes nowhere. That’s just baked into people’s consciousness. The fact is, people want change. So that means we have to be willing to change as well.”

### Finding Common Ground

Some Democratic lawmakers, like Sen. John Hickenlooper from Colorado, are open to seeking points of agreement with Republicans to advance policy objectives. Hickenlooper expressed a willingness to compromise on various issues to move forward in a bipartisan manner.

“Within that, there’s a million things that need to be decided. So I’d be happy to try and find compromises wherever possible,” Hickenlooper told Semafor.

### Standing Firm

However, not all Democrats are inclined to cooperate or compromise with the incoming administration. Senator Tim Kaine, D-Va., noted that the party has learned from past experiences and is prepared to navigate the challenges posed by Republican dominance in Washington, D.C.

“We’ve seen the movie… eight years ago. It was all a surprise to us. Now we know the basic playbook,” Kaine remarked.

### Call for Compromise

In a guest essay for The New York Times, Representative Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., cautioned against reflexive opposition to Trump’s agenda by Democrats. He warned that steadfast resistance could impede progress and hinder effective governance.

“As a Democratic member of Congress, I know my party will be tempted to hold fast against Mr. Trump at every turn: uniting against his bills, blocking his nominees and grinding the machinery of the House and the Senate to a halt. That would be a mistake,” Suozzi wrote.

As Democrats navigate the post-Trump political landscape, the call for strategic engagement and thoughtful compromise remains at the forefront of their approach.
