Bail was granted to an alleged director of New IRA, who has been accused of having changed his views on violence political.

Joe Barr, 34, was bailed after he was accused of being disowned by New IRA members for his stance.

Barr was charged with being a member and director of a prohibited organization and preparing terrorist acts.

He is one of 10 people being charged in connection to a joint MI5/police surveillance operation.

In December, Mr Barr from Cecilia’s Walk, Londonderry, declared that political violence was counter-productive.

Barr is accused of being present at secretly recorded meetings of New IRA leadership in Omagh County Tyrone, in February and July 2020.

Prosecutors claimed that recordings showed senior members of the group being addressed directly by the self-proclaimed chairman/chief of staff.

According to reports, discussions included cyber-attacks and economic bombing campaigns against Britain’s state as well as close-quarter shootings.

Police identified Mr Barr among the alleged participants in the briefing.

“The applicant has taken a step back, in a limited extent, from violent republicanism,” Justice O’Hara stated earlier Friday at the High Court Belfast.

“He hasn’t disavowed violence in that he described it as wrong or unconscionable, but it is possible for us to take what he said as a step in the right direction.”

Defense lawyers argued for bail because Barr is still being ostracized by dissident republicans and shunned by them since being “cast out”.

The court heard that his changing views were a betrayal and all ties have been cut.

The prosecution continued to resist his release. Mr Justice O’Hara was informed that it would take six months for more than 100 witnesses to be dealt with in pre-trial committal proceedings.

Mr Barr will be released on strict terms. He will need to pay a PS75,000 cash guarantee and must also comply with a prohibition order that he cannot enter an area of Derry.

He is also prohibited from participating in any political activity or the political party Saoradh.
