James Cameron still has big plans for “Avatar”. However, in order to start the numerous planned sequels, a success of the second part of his fantasy saga was essential. Now the star director can finally sit back and relax: “The Way of Water” is writing film history.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” has reached two more milestones in its record hunt. One of them is in Germany: The second part of the fantasy spectacle by star director James Cameron is now the most commercially successful film of all time in Germany. According to the Walt Disney Company, the film generated sales of 129 million euros at the German box office within 68 days. No small matter: After all, Germany is one of Disney’s most important markets worldwide, after the USA, China and France.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” breaks a record that was also set by Cameron 25 years ago and which still stands today. From a financial point of view, “Titanic” was enthroned at the top.
The fact that the disaster film with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio has now been overtaken in terms of sales also has something to do with the rise in ticket prices in recent years and the surcharge for cinema films in 3D. In terms of the number of German cinema-goers, however, “Titanic” is still ahead. But even in this statistic, it could only be a matter of time before “Avatar: The Way of Water” passes.
In the meantime, the fantasy epic also cracked a second milestone in the USA. There, the “Avatar” sequel now ranks third in the list of the most commercially successful films of all time. The film also had to push past “Titanic”, which is now in fourth place, as a listing on the “Box Office Mojo” page shows.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” can now post sales of around 2.245 billion US dollars. “Avengers: Endgame” is in second place with almost 2.8 billion US dollars. The front runner remains “Avatar: Departure for Pandora”, the strip with which Cameron laid the foundation for his fantasy epic in 2009. At just over 2.9 billion US dollars, it was still able to bring in more money than any other film to date.
The race had become exciting again recently because “Titanic” had come to the cinema again on the occasion of the 25th anniversary. In addition, it is not yet certain that “Avatar: The Way of Water” can also defend the place: According to “Box Office Mojo”, the two works are currently separated by just over a million US dollars. However, the trend over the past few days indicates that “Titanic” is likely to run out of air a little earlier.
