Drama in Serbia. On Wednesday morning, May 3, a school guard and several students were killed in a shooting at a school in Belgrade. According to the Serbian Interior Ministry, the death toll is eight students and one guard. Among the victims was a student of French nationality.
“In the shooting that took place this morning at the Vladislav Ribnikar primary school in Vracar [in central Belgrade, editor’s note], eight children and a guard were killed, while six children and a teacher were injured and were hospitalized,” the ministry said in a statement.
The student suspected of committing the crime, a 13-year-old boy, was found in the schoolyard and was arrested, according to the same source. He had with him a detailed plan of the killing and a list of the children targeted.
The suspect “planned the shooting for a month, he made a list of the children he planned to kill,” said Veselin Milic, the Serbian capital’s police chief, at a press conference.
“A great tragedy has taken place… A student… came out into a hallway and used a gun. Unfortunately, the guard succumbed to injuries, a teacher was seriously injured, the children were injured […] four or five children,” Milan Nedeljkovic, president of the municipality of Vracar, in central Belgrade, told reporters. earlier.
“He wanted to prevent this tragedy and he died […] The tragedy would probably have been worse if this man had not stood in front of the boy who was shooting”, added the local elected official, in front of the school, according to the images broadcast by national television (RTS). The shooting occurred around 8:40 a.m., according to the Serbian Interior Ministry.
A student of French nationality is among the victims of the shooting, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a press release. “Our services and our embassy in Belgrade are mobilized to provide all their support to the family of our young compatriot in this ordeal”, underlines the Quai d’Orsay, which also sends its “deepest condolences” to the families of those killed.
