Withdrawing money is more and more expensive for the French. As reported by Le Parisien, the French are increasingly abandoning cash in favor of the bank card. As a result, ATMs (ATMs) are not becoming profitable enough for banks. Institutions are therefore increasing fees, especially for “inappropriate withdrawals”, the act of withdrawing cash from an ATM that does not belong to their bank.

According to the online comparator Panorabanques, the average annual cost for four withdrawals moved per month has increased from 8.60 euros in 2021 to 12.75 euros in 2023. An increase of 48% in the space of two years.

“A catch-up was made at the end of the health crisis, analyzes Basile Duval, spokesperson for the comparator. The costs of maintaining an ATM increase for banks, but also the commissions they pay when a customer withdraws at another establishment. »

Online banks (Boursorama, Fortuneo, BforBank, OrangeBank and Monabanq) do not charge for withdrawing elsewhere, as they do not have ATMs in their network.

There will soon be another solution: BNP, Crédit Mutuel and Société Générale will join forces to pool 15,000 distributors. The new service, dubbed “Cash Services”, will limit these additional charges. This system will be operational from “the fourth quarter of 2023”. “We are going to strengthen the local offer and perpetuate the self-service banking to which the French are attached”, claim the three establishments.

Concretely, customers of these banks will be able to withdraw, or deposit, money in the ATMs deployed by the fiduciary services company, without any additional cost. “And, for the banking networks, this will make significant economies of scale, notes Basile Duval. In town, rather than three different ATMs in the same street, there will only be one left. In rural areas, customers will probably be able to travel fewer kilometers to withdraw. »

This collaboration between the three banks could be deployed on a larger scale and interest other banking establishments in search of savings. “We’re all going to look at how the first few months are going and customer satisfaction, that might give us some ideas,” the bank manager said. “This type of offer is of interest to everyone,” explains Basile Duval. This would prevent the disappearance of counters in certain territories. »
