The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation recently announced the 14 performer nominees for its 2025 induction, with four artists of color making the list. Among these diverse nominees are the legendary pop icon and R&B singer Mariah Carey, the groundbreaking hip-hop duo Outkast, the iconic Rock and Roll singer and dancer Chubby Checker, and the influential Mexican pop rock band Maná.

According to John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, each of these remarkable nominees has left an indelible mark on the music industry, shaping generations of music lovers and contributing to the ever-evolving sounds of rock & roll. The nomination process for the Hall of Fame considers various factors, including an artist’s impact on music culture, influence on subsequent musicians, the longevity of their career, and the body of work they have produced.

Mariah Carey, known for her five Grammy Awards and 19 number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, has solidified her status as a music legend with hit songs like “We Belong Together,” “Fantasy,” and “Touch My Body.” Outkast, composed of Atlanta natives André 3000 and Big Boi, has also made a significant impact on the industry, winning six Grammy Awards and producing chart-topping hits such as “Ms. Jackson,” “Hey Ya!,” and “So Fresh So Clean.”

Chubby Checker, now 83 years old, gained fame in the 1960s with his hit song “The Twist.” Checker’s protest outside the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s induction ceremony in 2004 highlighted his concerns about the lack of recognition for his contributions to music history. Despite his frustrations, Checker’s influence on the industry remains undeniable.

Maná, the first Spanish-language rock band to receive a nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has been a trailblazer in the music world for over 40 years. Hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, the band has captured the hearts of fans around the globe with their unique sound and powerful performances.

In addition to these diverse nominees, the list also includes British rock bands like Bad Company, Joy Division (later renamed New Order), and Oasis, as well as American rock bands The Black Crowes, Phish, and Soundgarden. English blues-rock singer Joe Cocker, British punk singer Billy Idol, pop icon Cyndi Lauper, and rock duo The White Stripes round out the remaining nominees.

The induction ceremony for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, set to take place in Los Angeles in the Fall, will honor the chosen inductees along with those recognized under special committee categories like Musical Influence, Musical Excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award. Stay tuned for more information on the ceremony dates and ticket sales.

As the music world eagerly anticipates the announcement of this year’s inductees, one thing is certain – the legacy of these diverse artists will continue to shape the future of rock & roll for years to come.
