Mercadona continues to consolidate its online shopping project with the launch of a second Beehive in the Community of Madrid, specifically in the town of Boadilla del Monte, smaller than the previous ones, and which reinforces the service it has, since 2020 , in the town of Getafe.
13.2 million euros have been invested in it and it will have a staff of 150 people. Initially, it will serve the towns of Boadilla del Monte, Alcorcón and Villaviciosa de Odón, to gradually extend its service to other areas of the Community of Madrid such as Leganés, Parla or Tres Cantos. All customers who receive their purchase in these new areas will have access to the new and intuitive online store through the web or the app with photos and which has shipments from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., in 2-hour periods, from Monday to Saturday. In addition, the service continues to improve and “Ready to Eat” products such as tortillas or Russian salad have begun to be sold online.
The general director of Mercadona Online, Juana Roig, has highlighted that “with this Hive in Boadilla we extend the new online purchase to more customers in the Community of Madrid, which is one of our main markets. We continue to take steps so that the maximum number of customers can buy online at Mercadona in a simple and comfortable way, in addition to generating a sustainable business in the long term”.
This Hive is added to those that Mercadona has already implemented in Valencia, Barcelona, ??Getafe (Madrid), Alicante and Seville with which the company has continued to strengthen the development of its online shopping service in Spain, a project that continues to grow and that has currently with 2,700 workers. The online channel at Mercadona registered a turnover of 540 million euros in 2022, 20% still comes from the old website and 80% comes from the new system with a new website and app.
Mercadona has different sales models based on the demand for orders in each town. On the one hand, the “Colmenas” model serves areas with a high density of online orders. On the other hand, for areas with a lower concentration of orders, it has a preparation and delivery model from the stores. This model is present in various cities such as Zaragoza, the Basque Country, Tarragona, Castellón and Almería.
Committed to the environment, the new online stores introduce elements that considerably reduce energy consumption, such as solar panels and special insulation for the cold storage area. On the other hand, the 600 vehicles that carry out online deliveries – 40 of them in the new Colmena that is being launched today in Madrid – have the eco label, being some micro-hybrid delivery vans and others running on gas, which has meant an investment over €28M. In addition, in the case of the Colmena de Boadilla, some innovations have been incorporated, such as the use of lithium batteries in the order preparation pallet trucks.
Mercadona online continues to bet on technological talent, profiles that work to develop and optimize both the processes and the software for the sale, preparation and delivery of online orders in hives and stores. An example of this is the continuous growth of the human team, this time with the expansion of its offices in Madrid.
