What are the longest words in Spanish? Surely this question has been asked in more than one conversation between friends or even during a moment of reflective solitude. Next, we leave doubts.
The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) itself indicated on its Twitter account which is the longest word that appears as a motto in the academic dictionary. It is about electroencephalographer, composed of neither more nor less than 23 letters and 10 syllables.
There will be those who challenge the proposal of the academics. And what about the 33-letter word hippotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia? Well, simply that this term, used to describe (not without joking) the phobia of long or complex words, is not included in the dictionary.
The RAE itself reminded a user of the blue bird social network that “there may be other well-formed words in Spanish that are longer” than electroencephalographer, only they do not appear in the dictionary. Neither is “supercalifragilistic”, the magical word from the movie Mary Poppins, and we can also find words that are just as long (21 letters).
Now yes, the 10 longest words contained in the Dictionary of the Language of the Royal Academy. All are compound words and most are of medical or biological origin:
10 syllables, 23 letters. “Person specialized in electroencephalography”, that is, in obtaining and interpreting electroencephalograms.
10 syllables, 22 letters. “Of or relating to electroencephalography”.
9 syllables, 22 letters. “Muscle of the neck, from the sternum and clavicle to the mastoid process, which is involved in the movements of flexion and rotation of the head.
9 syllables, 22 letters. “Quality of unconstitutional”, that is, that it goes against the Constitution.
10 syllables, 21 letters. “Part of medicine that studies the obtaining and interpretation of electroencephalograms”.
10 syllables, 21 letters. “Nucleotide whose constituent sugar is deoxyribose”.
10 syllables, 21 letters. “of or relating to otorhinolaryngology” or “of or relating to the ear, nose and larynx”
8 syllables, 21 letters. “Belonging or relating to the counterrevolution” or “supporter of the counterrevolution, or who favors it.”
10 syllables, 21 letters. “Anti-American attitude”, that is, “contrary to the United States of America, to Americans, or to the values ??that are considered characteristic of their society.”
8 syllables, 21 letters. “Interdisciplinary quality”, in relation to a study or other activity “that is carried out with the cooperation of several disciplines”.
The dictionary contains other words made up of 21 letters, so the last positions in the classification can also be occupied by terms such as constitutionalization, preterintentionality, co-responsibility or pseudohermaphroditism.
Already with 20 letters, we find words like otorhinolaryngologist, photolithographically, lithophotographically or magnetohydrodynamics, among others.
