A man was fatally shot by Greeley police on Wednesday afternoon after swinging a knife at passing cars, according to investigators. The incident took place in the 500 block of 16th Avenue in Greeley, where police officers responded to reports of a man brandishing a knife. The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team released a news report detailing the events that unfolded.
The unidentified man was located about half a mile northwest, on Second Street, where he was seen aggressively swinging a knife at passing cars. Despite the officer’s commands to drop the knife, the man refused and instead started walking quickly towards the officer. In response, the officer fired at the man, resulting in his death. Additional officers arrived at the scene and provided medical aid, but the man succumbed to his injuries at 2:25 p.m. The Weld County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for identifying the deceased individual.
The exact timing of the 911 calls reporting the man’s behavior is unknown. The shooting incident, which left no one else injured, is currently under investigation by the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team.
