watson-coleman-reintroduces-end-for-profit-prisons-act

Washington, D.C. (May 23, 2025) – So, like, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) just dropped the End For-Profit Prisons Act of 2025 on us today. This act, which she first introduced back in September 2016 during her rookie term in Congress, aims to phase out the Bureau of Prisons and U.S. Marshals Service contracts with those shady for-profit prison facilities. Instead, federal employees would be required to handle all the core correctional services.

Earlier this year, President Trump went ahead and signed some executive order to flip the script on the Biden Administration’s policy that was all about stopping the renewal of contracts between the Justice Department and private prison facilities. Apparently, these for-profit prisons are raking in over $300 million in profits each year – like, talk about cashing in on people’s misfortune. The private prisons have a rep for being pretty sketchy, with reports of abuse and horrible conditions as they try to squeeze out every last penny. In 2024, it came out that the private prison big shot GEO Group was the first to max out donations to Donald Trump’s SuperPAC with a cool $500,000.

The End For-Profit Prisons Act of 2025 is getting some love from other reps too – Reps Summer Lee (PA-12), LaMonica McIver (NJ-10), Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr. (GA-04), Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03), and James P. McGovern (MA-02) are all on board. They’re all about putting an end to this whole profit-driven prison game. If you wanna dig into the nitty-gritty details, you can check out the bill right here. Don’t really know why you’d wanna read all that legal jargon, but hey, knock yourself out.
