A new protest carried out by bateeiros due to the conflict of the cheek that they maintain with barnacles has registered this Thursday a police charge in the vicinity of the administrative complex of the Xunta in San Caetano, in Santiago.

The protests started around eight in the morning and, as in previous days, they coincided with the day in which the Galician Government meets at this headquarters. Something before nine, according to the participants in the protest, was when the police charge took place, which the protesters criticize as “disproportionate”. They claim that there were shots from rubber bullets “at head height” and “blows to the head and arms.”

At least one young woman was detained by the National Police and that motivated the protesters, several dozen people, to move through the streets of the old town of Compostela, setting off firecrackers until they reached the city police station, where a large police unit was waiting has cut Rodrigo de Padrón street.

There remain agents on the one hand and bateeiros on the other, chanting these last cries of ‘freedom Lorena’ and ‘councillor resignation’, given the news that reaches the sector that the detainee will not leave the police station “until early in the afternoon”. .

The bateeiros assure that there are several injured, at least one companion, from Rianxo, in the hospital, although “two ambulances” went to San Caetano. “They were prepared for this to happen, determined that we were not on a sidewalk. We have been peaceful for a long time and they want to put on a bad face,” some of the protesters have expressed at the gates of the police station.

“They ignore us. The president is going to Panama and the minister confronts the sectors,” they denounce, in relation to the conflict between bateeiros and barnacles.

For its part, the unified police union (SUP) has “roundly” condemned the events and affirms that several national police officers have been injured. He transfers his “total support” to the performance and talks about “two violent protesters arrested.” In any case, it advances that it will appear as a private accusation.

The conflict began three years ago, according to the bateeiro sector, and has to do with the lack of a cheek, the name given to the mussel seed.

At the beginning of this week, they regret, the Consellería do Mar “corrected for the worse” in regards to its sector, by once again closing cheek collection areas where barnacles also work.
