Alright, so like, Pew Research Center went ahead and did this study to figure out how Americans see discrimination against different groups in the good ol’ U.S. of A. Just a heads up, some groups like Jews, Muslims, and LGBTQ folks are too small to get enough data for this survey, so they weren’t really included in the results.
For this whole shebang, they asked 3,589 adults from April 7 to April 13, 2025. Everyone who took part is part of the American Trends Panel (ATP), which is a group of people randomly picked from across the country to give their opinions regularly. You know, to make sure we get a good mix of all kinds of folks. They chatted with these people either online or over the phone, you know, normal survey stuff.
So, it turns out, most Americans think that a bunch of groups face discrimination in the good ol’ USA. Like, 82% of them say that immigrants who are here illegally get a lot or some discrimination, which is the highest percentage out of all the groups in the survey. But it’s not just them, folks also think that transgender people, Muslims, Jews, Black and Hispanic people, Asians, and even legal immigrants face some form of discrimination. It’s a whole mix of feelings out there.
Alright, so let’s break it down a bit more. Women face some discrimination according to 64% of adults, but men not so much at 34%. When it comes to religion, 57% think religious people get discriminated against, but only a third say the same for atheists. And get this, more folks think city dwellers face discrimination compared to rural residents. It’s a whole big ol’ mess of opinions out there.
In terms of racial and ethnic groups, the survey found that perceptions of discrimination have actually gone down over the past year, especially among Republicans. But Democrats and Republicans still have pretty different views on who faces the most discrimination. It’s like two different worlds out there, folks. And hey, the survey also found that fewer Americans think Muslims, Jews, and LGBTQ folks face discrimination compared to a year ago. It’s a wild ride out there, no doubt.
