Coco Gauff, a rising star in the world of professional tennis, has recently made headlines by winning a Grand Slam championship in the fall of 2023. At just 20 years old, she has become the youngest American to win the U.S. Open since Serena Williams achieved the same feat back in 1999. Gauff has long admired the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, who have paved the way for young Black tennis players like herself to succeed on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour.
In a recent interview with Baker Tilly US, Gauff opened up about the challenges she has faced as a Black tennis player in a predominantly white sport. She expressed how difficult it was to find her place and be recognized in the tennis world, especially within her own community where tennis was not a popular sport. However, the example set by Serena and Venus Williams inspired her to keep pushing forward and striving for success.
Gauff’s admiration for the Williams sisters dates back to when she was just 8 years old, watching them dominate at the 2012 U.S. Open. The experience left a lasting impression on her and fueled her desire not only to excel in tennis but also to be a role model for other young Black athletes. She believes that seeing people who look like her achieve greatness in the sport gives her the confidence to pursue her own dreams and inspire others to do the same.
