The adjustment of payment platforms to what is already the new paradigm of the sector has not finished. After Netflix canceled shared accounts and the price hike on Disney or Prime Video, it’s HBO Max’s turn.
Through an email that it is sending to subscribers, and also with a change in the subscription process on its website, the platform has announced that as of today, June 13, 2023, the price of a new monthly subscription to HBO Max in the Nordic countries and Spain will increase 1 euro per month and 2 in Bulgaria and Portugal.
In other words, the price in Spain, which until today was 8.99 euros, now costs 9.99 euros per month. What does continue, according to HBO Max, is the 50% forever promotion: “Yes, the 50% forever discount promotion will continue as long as your HBO Max subscription is active and you continue to meet the conditions of the promotional offer “. That is, whoever had this option will continue to pay 4.99 euros per month.
It is the first time that HBO Max has increased the price of a monthly subscription since its launch in the Nordic countries and Spain in October 2021 and in Bulgaria and Portugal in March 2022.
As explained by the payment platform, “this price increase is due to the rise in electricity prices and the higher costs of content creation and product development”, while it will be used to “continue investing in the quality content and product experience that we strive to provide our customers.” However, customers are not explained at any time what kind of improvements will be with this rise in prices.
The good news is that while current HBO Max direct subscribers and in-app subscribers will see their monthly rate increased starting with their next billing cycle after July 13, 2023, those on the annual rate will stay the same. at 69.99 euros.
This change in rates comes just three months after Warner Bros. Discovery made the decision to end HBO Max with the aim of removing the scepter of power from the platforms to Netflix. In short, end HBO and stay only with the Max. The key to everything: the merger of HBO and Discovery, becoming a gigantic platform that can compete without limitations in a market dominated by Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney.
At that time, Warner announced the prices for new subscribers to Max, but left those who came from HBO Max as they were. Until today. From now on, all old and new will pay almost the same. From now on, everyone who wants to access the platform will have to pay 9.99 euros.
