Eric Bieniemy, a well-known figure in the football world, is making a return to the NFL after a stint at UCLA. According to a report from CBS Sports on Saturday, Bieniemy has agreed to join the Chicago Bears as their running backs coach. This move comes as newly appointed head coach Ben Johnson continues to fill out his coaching staff, with Bieniemy being the latest addition.
Bieniemy, who previously served as the offensive coordinator at UCLA during the football program’s first season in the Big Ten Conference, has an impressive background in both playing and coaching. He was a standout running back in college and went on to be selected as a second-round NFL Draft pick in 1991. In addition to his playing career, Bieniemy has also held coaching positions at various levels.
From College to the Pros
After his time at Colorado as a running backs coach, Bieniemy transitioned to the professional ranks as the running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. He later returned to Colorado as the Buffaloes’ offensive coordinator in 2011. However, it was during his tenure as the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs that Bieniemy truly made a name for himself.
During his time with the Chiefs, Bieniemy was part of two Super Bowl-winning coaching staffs, contributing to the team’s success with his expertise. Following the 2022 season, Bieniemy made the decision to leave Kansas City and took on a new role as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023, where he was given the opportunity to call plays.
Championship Experience Comes to Chicago
Now, Bieniemy is expected to bring his wealth of championship experience to the Chicago Bears’ coaching staff. Alongside former Denver Broncos tight end coach Declan Doyle as the Bears’ offensive coordinator and Antwaan Randle El as the assistant head coach, Bieniemy will play a key role in shaping the team’s success moving forward.
As the Chiefs gear up to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9, Bieniemy’s focus will be on his new coaching responsibilities with the Bears. It’s an exciting time for both Bieniemy and the Bears as they look to make an impact in the upcoming NFL season.
